Bordering Dublin, County Kildare has a wealth of sights and attractions for visitors looking for a trip away from the capital. Among these is the Curragh, a racecourse which is the home of Irish thoroughbred horseracing. The name itself derives from the Irish term for the sport and refers to a 5000 acre area of land which lends itself perfectly to training and running horses. Amidst this land is the racecourse and it has been presenting racegoers with unforgettable days out at Curragh races since the first Irish Derby was held in 1866.

In addition to providing the best Flat racing in Ireland, the Curragh also hosts the most lucrative fixtures, with 10 out of the 12 Group 1 Flat races in the country held at the course.
There are 19 fixtures held throughout the Flat racing season including all 5 of the Irish Classics which are the Oaks, the 1000 guineas, 2000 Guineas, St. Leger, and the Derby.
The track is a 2 mile right hander, which is shaped like a horseshoe and hosts races under 6 furlongs on the straight section. The quality of racing at Curragh is of the very highest standard indeed and all races are keenly contested by the best horses and jockeys in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

The standard of the racing is certainly a draw for racegoers but the location, close to Dublin means the course is easily accessed by day trippers from the capital and with ample opportunities for some excellent hospitality too, a day at Curragh races is a popular leisure experience for those new to racing and for families and groups simply looking for a fun and exciting day out. Special buses are available on racedays from the capital and return half an hour after the final race.

Racegoers have a choice of admission options into the course. Standard admission on the day costs €15 and €20 for the Classic Curragh races. Entrance for the Irish Derby is €40. Purchasing a day membership for €30 is a further option and allows entry into the Grandstand Premier enclosure where there is limited free seating for those who come early. Persons under 25 and OAPs can get into the course for half price to events other than the Derby and those under 16 get in for free when accompanied by an adult and for €5 for the Derby.
A hospitality package may be the best option for many, especially for those new to racing and who want the best value all inclusive deals. The Family Package admits two adults and up to three children for just €25 on standard racedays and €35 for the Classics.
